It's been strongly suggested that New Kids on the Block may be readying a reunion.
(The snippet of a new song on the group's website makes it seem a certainty.)
There is NO EXPLAINABLE REASON why I'm looking as forward to this as I currently am - but I'm truly excited.
I saw NKOTB live in 1990, at the tender age of 13. Yes, it's true... I was one of the three males there not wearing a 'staff' tee-shirt or onstage performing. (Then again, the idea of being one of the few males in a crowd chock-full of girls wasn't so bad to me. I was 13, after all.)
I think a lot of it comes from the pressures of being an adult are nowhere near as fun as it was to be a kid. When I was a kid those guys were EVERYWHERE. Tee-shirts, action figures, the radio (Power 108!), MTV, magazines, McDonald's ads...EVERYWHERE. I was young and impressionable, and anything with a gimmick was GUARANTEED to grab my attention. And it's all we had as kids. We didn't know better.
Kids nowadays have Xbox360 - we had Nintendo, and I don't recall anyone complaining.
Britney was called Debbie Gibson back in my day, and she wasn't nuts.
Paula Abdul wasn't even a judge then! She was a singer/dancer.
And, Jonas fans can relate - the way you feel about the Bros, that's how much kids liked NKOTB.
I'm sort of ashamed. As a grown man, I shouldn't be looking this forward to this reunion... I'm married, for the love of the Lord. (To a woman, no less) I have normal adult expenditures, I like to enjoy a cocktail or two, I have hobbies like reading and travelling...
And evidently it doesn't take much more than the threat of a bunch of near middle-aged guys getting on a stage to sing and dance to make me reach for my wallet to buy concert tickets.
I'm awesome...
